As of the end of February, nearly 6.5 million EU citizens had applied for a permanent UK residence permit, the UK Home Office said on Thursday. The statistics contain the citizenship data of applicants until the end of 2021: accordingly, the number of applications submitted by Hungarians by December 31 is more than 161 thousand.
According to a recent summary by the UK Home Office, citizens of 27 EU member states residing in the UK submitted 6,493,300 applications for the establishment by 28 February 2022, of which 437,000 came after the deadline. By the last day of February, more than 90 percent of applications had been considered.
Great Britain withdrew from the EU on 31 January 2020, but by the end of 2020, at the end of the 11-month interim period after Brexit, EU citizens who had legally and habitually settled in Great Britain could still retain all the rights they had acquired but would have to apply for a residence permit indefinitely. Legal status.
The deadline, in principle, was June 30 last year. However, the UK Government continues to encourage beneficiaries to submit their application in any case, as the authorities will accept and process formal applications for the institution that meet the deadline.
Of the approved applications, 51 per cent were granted permanent status, i.e. in 41 per cent of cases without a deadline, pre-settlement status. The latter is available to those who came with the intention of establishing themselves before 31 December 2020, but have not yet resided in the UK for five years at the time of submission. They can wait until the end of five years to get a final residency permit. Until then, they have full rights to the rights they have acquired. In the remaining 9 per cent of cases, the applications were rejected, withdrawn by the applicants or invalid.
The database of applicants’ citizenship has been added to the British Home Office’s figures until the end of 2021, according to which 161,600 Hungarian citizens have applied for a permanent residence permit in Great Britain.
Romanians topped the list with 1,184,370 applications, followed by Poles, with 1,137,570 applying for UK immigration status by the end of December. Italian applications 572,350, Portuguese 436,650 and Spanish 372,300. Among the citizens of the largest EU member states living in Great Britain, 240,530 French and 170,230 Germans applied for permanent residency by the end of 2021. (MTI)
