The US government wants to install a nuclear fission power plant on the Moon with the help of NASA. The goal is to create the power source needed for future research on the Moon.
The nuclear reactor will be built by an outside company on Earth, but will be powered by the Moon – The Independent newspaper reported.
NASA believes the idea is relatively easy to implement and very useful, as a constant source of energy not provided by the sun but produced on its own is essential for further tasks in the celestial body.

The US space agency has reportedly begun searching for potential contractors. Applications should include plans for a uranium reactor core, a system for converting nuclear energy into usable energy, a heat treatment system to cool the reactor and a distribution system providing at least 40 kilowatts of continuous electricity for 10 years.
However, it is essential that the facility be able to close without human assistance. According to NASA, a similar power plant could be built on the surface of Mars. Preliminary drafts must be submitted by contractors by February 19, 2022.
