Finland – Belgium, the happiest country on earth, advanced to 17th place even during the Corona era
Belgium has moved up from 17th to 17th place in the previous year. Trust in fellow human beings and in governments.
According to preliminary reports, the Finns are still the happiest people on earth during the Corona period, followed by Icelanders and Danes and people from Switzerland, the Netherlands and Sweden. Germany, Norway, New Zealand and Austria finish in the top 10. Of the 95 countries rated in 2020, the least fortunate were Zimbabwe, Tanzania and Jordan.
“We urgently need to learn from Govt-19,” said Jeffrey Sachs, co-author of the report and director of Columbia University’s Center for Sustainable Development in New York. “The epidemic reminds us of our global environmental threats, the urgent need to cooperate and the difficulties of working together in every country and world.” The World Happiness Report is a reminder to strive for well-being rather than just prosperity.
It should come as no surprise to researchers that Finland tops the lucky list in terms of epidemics. They explained that mutual trust, as it has helped to save lives and livelihoods during the corona crisis, has always been very high among the Finns. (dpa / tf)
