Index – Abroad – Brexit Here or there, a lot more people want to settle in the UK

2021.11.12. 06:01

According to the latest figures from the UK Home Office on Thursday, nearly a quarter of a million EU citizens have applied for a long-term UK residence permit since the end of June, with a total of 6.3 million by the end of October.

The UK officially withdrew from the EU on January 31 last year. However, EU citizens who have legally and legally immigrated to the UK by the end of 2020 can remain in the country with all the rights they have acquired until the end of the 11-month interim period following the expiration of British EU membership (Brexit), but indefinitely, they must apply for a residence permit. Its deadline expired in principle on June 30, but the UK government has previously indicated that it will accept applications submitted late for an indefinite period of reasonable grounds.

Since then, London has consistently encouraged claimants to submit their application in any case because, despite the deadline, the authorities will accept and process formal applications for the company that meets the terms.

According to a new summary released by the UK Home Office on Thursday, 236,840 EU-27 citizens living in the UK have applied for settlement status between June 30 and October 31, four months after the deadline. As of the last day of October, 6,287,700 applications had been received from EU citizens, and 5,908,400 applications had been processed; 463 850 After the June 30 deadline.

As of October 31, 52 per cent of the applications had been considered and in 42 per cent of the approved applications, applicants were granted permanent, i.e. pre-settled status. The latter is available to those who intend to establish themselves before 31 December 2020, but have not yet completed five years of living in the UK at the time of submission. They can wait until the end of five years to get a final residence permit. In the meantime, they will receive full rights to the purchased rights.

As of Thursday, the UK Home Office had rejected 3 per cent of applications examined by the end of October. Current interim monthly figures do not have a country wise division as the Ministry generally provides these detailed figures in detailed quarterly figures. According to the latest quarterly data compiled in September, 155,490 Hungarian citizens have applied for a permanent British residence permit by the June 30 deadline.

The UK Home Office has previously indicated that the acquired rights of those who have applied for established status by the deadline but have not yet been notified of the outcome of the assessment will remain in full operation and practice. Meanwhile, the ministry has extended the same guarantee to those who have submitted or filed the application after June 30.
