Index – Abroad – The man who got a genetically modified pig’s heart is fine

An American man, 57-year-old David Bennett, became the first person in the world to have a genetically modified pig heart transplanted. The seven-hour trial was conducted on Saturday, and doctors say the man is fine.

Either I die or get the transplant done. I know we only grope in the dark, but this was my last chance

David Bennett explained why he decided to undergo an organ transplant. Although the transplant was successful, it is not known what the man’s chances of surviving for many years.

Doctors at the University of Maryland Hospital obtained special permission from US health authorities, saying the man would die. His health was so poor that he actually found it unfit to transplant a human heart.

In the United States, an average of 17 people die each day while waiting to receive a new organ, and Bartley Griffiths said the transplant has brought the world closer to solving the problem of organ shortage.

Doctors say David Bennett was breathing without a machine on Monday and watching every vibration in his body, after all, they don’t know how the man’s body reacts in the long run and accepts the genetically modified heart.
