Index – Science – Life expectancy, old age? – sleep a lot!

An international study showed that seven hours of sleep for middle-aged and elderly people is the ideal amount of sleep.

The American and Chinese scientists published their study in the scientific journal Nature Aging. As they wrote: more or much less than that sleeping It may be associated with poor mental health and poor mental performance.

Researchers at the University of Cambridge and Fudan University in Shanghai studied data from nearly half a million adults aged 38 to 73 from the UK Biobank database.

Participants were asked about their sleep habits, mental health, and well-being and underwent a series of cognitive tests. For nearly 40,000 participants, the researchers also received MRI scans of their brains and genetic data.

Analysis of the data showed that sleep that was too short but too long could also be associated with lower cognitive performance — those who completed the tests were slower and had less attention, as well as a poorer ability to solve problems.

The researchers also found that people who slept more or less were more likely to have symptoms of anxiety, depression, and feel ill.

According to the results, the researchers pointed out that good sleep is very important, especially in old age.
