Totalcar – Magazine – The new Mercedes SL has arrived, but it really hasn’t gotten any smaller

SL has been pushed into the background for a few years With the AMG GT sports car The opposite, but now Mercedes has returned to its famous name. The latest generation, of course, has acquired the latest AMG technology in the current Mercedes design.

At first glance, the SL appears to be the successor to the AMG GT. It wears a similar vertical grille, widening downwards, only the triangular lamps are of a different style. The shape does not come as a big surprise in any case: it fits perfectly into the current Mercedes image in every detail, and its dimensions follow the usual molds from Mercedes sports cars. Here, too, we encounter a good long nose as well as relatively short front and rear parts.

The new SL is larger than its predecessors: In the previous SL 7.4 cm, 15.4 cm longer than the open AMG GT – 4.705 meters in total – and a wheelbase of 2.7 metres. A family car could fit such a large floor area, but due to the large wheels and body width, it does not pass by the images that the new SL has gained weight despite previous rumors. It’s even more clear from the mass data: this SL weighs about 150 kilograms more than its predecessor, which means a drive-ready mass of 1950-1970 kilograms.

Currently, the engine range is made up of two variants of the usual four-liter AMG V8: the weaker engine in the SL 55 also has 476 hp – the 100th speed in 3.9 seconds – while the more powerful SL 63 engine is 585 hp, which That’s an additional three-tenths of an acceleration feature. A hybrid and mild hybrid, both equipped with a six-cylinder turbocharged engine, are said to arrive later, but no specific data has been reported so far.

The drivetrain in the new SL will be all-wheel drive for the first time in the model’s history, and it appears that only a nine-speed automatic transmission will be available from the transmission. However, the latter does not carry the usual hydrodynamic torque converter between the engine and gearboxes, but rather has a multi-disc clutch that has an oil bath, so it is said to react much faster than a conventional automatic transmission.

Following the fashion, they also returned to the SL’s fabric roof, which runs even faster – 15 seconds is enough to open and close – and operation up to 60 km/h can be started at the touch of a button. The Airscarf system, which keeps passengers warm even with the roof open, will be standard on the just-introduced V8 models, while the six-cylinder is expected to be an additional cost.

Inside, the SL isn’t a very special feature, but that’s because two screens provide plenty of interface here as well, similar to the current S-Class solution. Only the blinds on the side of the dashboard, the carbon-fiber inserts in the center console, and of course the location of the seats suggest we’re seeing a sportier model.
